Here's a review from an advanced urban / fitness skater who's been blading for 15+ years and goes through a pair of blades about every year or so. If you just want the quick take, here it is: the Rollerblade 100 Urban Skates FLY and are more comfortable than previous Rollerblade inline skates. Now for the details. . . .

My previous pair was the Rollerblade Crossfire 100. I LOVED these skates because the speed was unbelievably fast- they crank. I would have bought a new pair of Crossfire 100s, but as Rollerblade discontinued the Crossfire line, I was forced to look at new options. My review will include a lot of comparisons between the older Crossfire 100 and the new Rollerblade 100 (RB 100)

ABOUT MY SKATING / EQUIPMENT NEEDS: I'm in my early 40s and skate to stay and shape and relieve stress. I try and skate 3x / week. I skate very hard and move at top speed for the majority of any skating session- very little `taking it easy'. I pass most every other skater I come across, and am rarely if ever overtaken- and when I am, it's usually by someone on a bike or Segway scooter. When I'm done skating I'm completely relaxed and free of any stress, due to the fact that I just pushed myself to the extreme for 90-180 minutes. My primary skating environment is Venice Beach boardwalk (Southern California) and the bike path. Flat for the most part, but some inclines on nearby streets. Wind is the major factor I'm contending with. When it's windy, it can be strong enough to stop your forward momentum- even pushing you backwards if you're at a standstill. Sometimes it feels like I'm skating with a parachute tied to my back. Of course the flip side is skating when the wind is at your back. During those times, hitting 25-30 mph is easy. Although I probably should, I don't wear a helmet or pads. I rarely go down, and only experience about 1 wipeout / year. Crowd density varies- sometimes (cold / windy days) I rarely see anyone; however other times (sunny days / vacation times) it's a zoo and there are people everywhere- many of which have no common sense and walk aimlessly across a bike path without looking. Road surfaces vary- from rough city streets to smooth, pristine poured concrete bike paths. So. . . I require skates that are fast, durable, comfortable, highly responsive and able to handle various road surfaces.

SPEED: The RB 100 is every bit as fast as the Crossfire 100- not faster- but they smoke. Fastest skates I've owned, they do not disappoint when it comes to speed. Only way to get faster would be to move up to a racing style skate, which isn't a match for my skating style.

COMFORT: That's the big difference- I found the new RB 100 to be a lot more comfortable than the Crossfire 100. The Crossfire 100 had excellent support due to a hard outer frame which rises higher up above the ankle. The big plus of that design was stability. The negatives were a) it became uncomfortable after extended aggressive skating due to the restrictive fit; and b) it slowed responsiveness of the skate. The RB 100 does have a molded plastic upper similar to the Crossfire 100, however it doesn't rise up past the ankle as high, and it's not an external molded frame that it connects to. This translates into a more comfortable fit due to how it cinches down (more on that later), and a more responsive skate. As for the shock absorber, I'm not able to provide a strong opinion due to the fact I haven't yet used the RB 100s extensively. However I did find the boot to be very comfortable from the first time I used them- and that's saying something.

SUPPORT: this was actually my biggest concern of moving to the RB 100. I really need a skate that provides stability at the ankles, because I'm an aggressive fitness / street skater and without that support, I feel like I need to hold back on skating as aggressively as I'd like in order to maintain proper form. In practice, I found the new RB 100 to provide more than adequate support. It is accurate to say the RB 100 Urban Skates provide less support than the Crossfire 100, however its only slightly less support and not dramatically less support. In fact I've concluded that the slight bit of stability I gave up pales in comparison to the gains made in boot comfort and skate responsiveness.

WHEELS + BEARINGS: The RB 100s come with (3) 100mm wheels and (1) 90mm wheel (under the ball of your foot). Wheels are of the 84A variety, which are my favorite and last a pretty long time even on rough surfaces. During winter time I actually prefer 83A because they're a bit softer, but they don't last as long. The SG9 bearings are super fast.

CLOSURES: like the Crossfire 100, the RB 100 utilizes laces. I'm not a big fan of laces as they take more time to adjust during skating, they're one of the first things to break, and they are difficult to cinch down with evenly disbursed tension, causing an uneven fit (tighter than you'd like it to be in certain areas, looser than you'd like it to be in others). I will say that due to how the laces cinch up on the RB 100, the uneven cinching is less of an issue, however it's still not perfect. I strongly favor the 'laceless' / 'speed lacing' systems that Rollerblade used to offer on older models (problematic because they broke, and cinching could loosen during use); and are now available on K2's VO2 Max 100 BOA. I recommend Rollerblade bring this lacing system back (after they've perfected it) as it's unquestionably superior. Additionally, there's a 'Power Strap' that secures your leg to the top of the cuff. This closure system offers a more comfortable fit than the Crossfire 100, due to the fact that you're not cinching into an external plastic frame, and is part of the reason the RB 100 is more comfortable. My only beef (which is rather minor) is that it's a long strap and I don't care for how it lays when not in use. I found an easy way to secure the strap during non-use, and I'll say this 'concern' is more about cosmetics and convenience, and because it contributes to a more comfortable boot fit, I'm OK with it. The other closure is a buckle that lays at a 45 degree angle. This closure locks the top of your foot into the boot and enhances stability, and the angle of the closure allows for a proper cinching. It's adjustable and can be tightened, loosened or disengaged quickly. For someone like me who has a flat foot, a bit longer strap would allow for a few more cinching adjustments, however I'm fine with it on the last (loosest) setting.

FIT + FINISH: Like all previous Rollerblade products I've owned, the RB 100 are made of high quality materials and are beautifully constructed and finished. I punish my skates and am pretty sure these will last just as long as the previous Rollerblade skates I've owned (about a year). Overall the skates look very premium- with the orange boot, black uppers, extruded aluminum frame (with painted-on details) and white wheels.

APPEARANCE: I tend to favor darker colors that don't scream 'hey everyone, look at me', and given the option, I've always purchased skates that are gray, blue, black, etc. and tend to 'blend in' with the jeans and darker sweatshirts I typically wear. However that wasn't an option with the RB 100- I could only find them in orange. And of course I wanted them and had to have them, so I bought them. And the verdict is: the orange boots with black uppers are SICK (as in, super awesome). Yes they are indeed more noticeable than darker colors that blend in, but they look hot and I noticed that people were 'checking them out' more than my older pairs. I tend to think they send a message that 'this guy knows what he's doing' because they look very professional, aggressive and bold.

PRICE / VALUE: If you demand top speed, comfort, support and top quality gear (that's me), the $280 + tax price tag didn't really bother me and probably won't bother you either. True I paid $175 + tax for my Crossfire 100s and those skates rocked, so I paid $100+ more for the RB 100s. But given that I can make a pair of skates last for about a year (skating 10 months out of the year, 2-3x / week, 90-180 minutes per session; and of course I buy new wheels and bearings from time to time), over the lifetime of the skates, it's a small investment to make. If you don't need top speed, and / or your require a closure system that comes up higher on the leg, you don't need RB 100s- there are other options (from Rollerblade and other Manufacturers) that cost less and will more than meet your needs.

COMPETITION: I have only ever owned Rollerblade inline skates, and have purchased at least 12 pair. They've served me well and I like the product line overall. But I have to say I'm more than intrigued by K2's VO2 Max 100 BOA. The 2013s are priced at approx. $300 and aren't yet available, but because they look to be very high quality, comfortable and feature a speed lacing system, I'm going to buy a pair in a couple weeks when they come out. That'll allow me to trade off skates, and I'll finally get to see what K2s are all about.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I love my new RB 100 Urban Skates and just looking at them makes me want to skip work and go blading, even though I'm completely exhausted from yesterday's session. They're a premium product, and they're one of the few things I own that I can honestly say I love. I gave them 4 out of 5 stars because I feel like they are missing the speed lacing system and I'm not a huge fan of standard laces.
